Champions Online Gold is a superhero-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game. It is made by former City of Heroes/Villains developer Cryptic Studios. The rules and setting for the game are based on the HERO System ruleset. The game has been released for Microsoft Windows. You need to pay a subscription to play it.
Champions Online Gold is action-oriented. When you use successful attacks and blocks, your power meter increases. This, in term, can be used to unleash more powerful actions. When someone dies, the game handles it in a similar fashion to City of Heroes. A player can be revived by a teammate or they respawn at a neutral site. Respawning does not accrue the experience debt. When you die, you lose one of the Hero Stars you have gained. You gain these stars for staying alive when defeating NPCs. Your character will gain bonuses for every star you earned.
The game also features system call an "orb system". Defeated enemies may drop orbs which will temporarily benefit your hero as it gives him/her powers, energy or life.
The game also includes non-combat crafting skills. These include various studies in arms, magic and science. Each of these skills has three specializations that a player can choose from. There are also travel powers, such as using webs/grappling hooks to swing, fire flying, hover disks, rocket boot jumping, jet-boot flying, super speed, super jump, acrobatics (fast running, leaps and flips), ice sliding, teleportation, tunneling and earth flying.
Champions Online Gold has a character creation system that is similar to City of Heroes. But now you can edit the movement animation your hero uses. For example, a hero that is a beast can be made to run on all fours legs. You can also edit the firing position and color of their powers. So you can change a power's animation to red instead of green or change the power so it starts from your hero's head head rather than palms.
Another difference between Champions Online Gold and City of Heroes is that there is no archetype system or character class. Any character can get any power or skill. Champions Online Gold also allows you to play solo throughout the career of your hero, should you desire this.
When your reach level twenty five, you can create their own special nemesis. You can even create their own minions. The creation system for this is the same as the creation system that was used to creatur your hero. There are a few selections specifically made for your nemesis. The nemesis' minions will play a very important role. They will ambush your hero. They will also provide information and clues which will result in nemesis missions. The end result will be a showdown between you and your nemesis. The current level cap is level forty. There is a special content and gameplay when you reach this cap.
