Pirates of the Burning Sea Doubloon is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Flying Lab Software. The game is set in 1720 in the middle of the Caribbean. It combines swashbuckling combat, tactical ship combat and an immersive player-driven economy.
When you start the game, you can choose a career for your character. You choice in career will determine what features and abilities you will gain as a captain. You will gain a point for ever other level you gain. These points can be used for a player's career. How you spend the points depends on your career. Your career, however, cannot be changed.
Each career has a grand total of forty five skill points. There are skill trees witch has nine skill chains. Each skill chain has five skills on it. A player who reaches the end of a single skill chain by Rank fifteen will be considered sort of equal to someone with Rank fifty on the skill chain.
The different careers options for nationals (Spanish, French or British) are:
1) Naval officer. These officers focuses on escorting duties, defense and direct, broadside-to-broadside fight. Naval Officers can get access to powerful ships later on in the game.
2) Privateer. This class focuses on the advantages smaller ships have to outwit and outmaneuver their opponents. Privateers get an edge during boarding combat. They can learn a skill which allows them to make use of Pirate PvP zones.
3) Freetrader. Free trader focuses on production, economics and trading. They can evade opponents during combat. Freetraders also learn skills which improve their ability to produce goods and find resources.
If you go the route of the pirate, you have the following options open to you:
1) Cutthroat. This career has all-around capabilities. Highlights including being able to command defeated ships. These ships, however, have only one durability point. Once a pirate commands a class specific ship, the pirate is flagged for PvP combat.
2) Buccaneer. This is the more advanced pirate career. It has more moment type skills. This class can collect and use captured ships deeds. It can also give bonuses to allied ships.
In Pirates of the Burning Sea Doubloon are around fifty five ships you can choice between. More will be added as the game is updated. Your choice in ship affects your combat capabilities and your economic capabilities. Many of the ships are created by the user.
Generally, the larger the ship, the less maneuverable the ship is. This means that bigger with more firepower is not always the best choice. Due to the battle mechanics within the game, the speed and maneuverability of a ship has a huge effect on combat. In fact, small ships, particularly when attacking in large groups, can beat larger ships. The developers of this game have stated that these smaller ships were not designed to beat larger ships when they go one on one. They were meant to play support roles for other ships in Pirates of the Burning Sea Doubloon.
The size of your ship also determines the amount of cargo you can hold. This is really important if you are a freetraders since the money you can make on a trip is determined by how much you can carry. Merchant ships are usually less armed but they have more cargo space.
